Profile of Shanghai Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry (SIPI)
Founded in 1957 and subordinated to the State-owned Assets, Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC), Shanghai Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry (SIPI) is one of the largest and most comprehensive research institutes in the Chinese pharmaceutical industry. With 2500 employees and 1 billion total capital, SIPI was granted as excellent in the industry by SASAC in state-owned assets preservation and increment.
SIPI has many facets and strengths, leading the profession with a host of scientific breakthroughs.
The R&D system of SIPI covers all fields of pharmaceutics. SIPI has many advanced technological platforms supporting innovative research for organic synthesized pharmaceuticals, microbiological and biochemical pharmaceuticals, biotechnological drugs, traditional Chinese medicines & novel preparations, pharmaceutical preparations and new drug delivery systems, and process innovation for most demanding drugs. Recently government administrations such as the State Food and Drug Admini-stration (SFDA), has setup four national research centers in SIPI, including the National Pharmaceutics Engineering Research Center (NPERC), the National Pharmaceutical Industry Information Center (NPIIC), the National (Shanghai) Center for New Drug Safety Evaluation and Research (NCNDSER), and the National Drug Package Testing Center (NDPTC). With these technological platforms, SIPI has the capability to compete in global scientific research.
With two members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 65 experts entitled Government Special Allowance of the State Council, and 12 specialists in the Committee of New Drug Evaluation, SIPI is accredited as a First-class Pharmaceutical Academic Institute, with all majors in pharmacy for Doctoral candidates. In 2002, the Pharmacy College of Shanghai Jiaotong University was established jointly between Shanghai Jiaotong University and SIPI. More than 200 postgraduate students are currently active in SIPI.
SIPI scientific research contributed significantly to the growth of the Chinese pharmaceutical industry. SIPI was granted more than 300 awards at municipal, provincial and national levels, including 13 National Science Invention Awards and 13 National Science and Technology Progress Awards. SIPI was granted 209 New Drug Certificates, holds 27 approved patents and has additional 157 patents pending. Primary products manufactured in over 20 public pharmaceutical companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchange were transfered from SIPI. More than 95% of all projects have been commercialized.
SIPI is the dominant shareholder of two high-tech companies: Shanghai Modern Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and SIPI Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. In June 2004, Shanghai Modern Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. was listed in the Shanghai Stock Exchange (stock code 600420) by five promoters in which SIPI is the primary promoter.
As a modern high-tech pharmaceutical enterprise group with strength, initiative and influence, SIPI has made great strides as a scientific and technical innovation center combined with production, education and research in the Chinese pharmaceutical industry.
